The Brief and Only Guide You’ll Ever Need to Choose a New Career

Is your career starting to feel too much like work?

Sure, your job can’t be fun all the time, but if you hit a point where clocking in seems almost unbearable, it may be time to consider a career change. That said, choosing a new career is easier said than done.

Are you thinking about changing your profession but aren’t sure where to start? We’re here to help! Here’s everything you need to know about how to choose a new career.

    Find What Inspires You

Many people make career choices based on potential income or convenience. But, committing yourself to a field that doesn’t excite or fulfill you at all can make your everyday workday feel intolerable.

While considering potential new careers, take some time to figure out what inspires you or what aspects of your current job make you feel satisfied. Once you identify what you enjoy, you can start looking for jobs that include those elements.

    Take a Career Assessment

Career aptitude tests aren’t just for high schoolers anymore.

If you know that you want to get out of your current field but aren’t sure where to go next, taking a career test could help you find your new niche.

Apart from helping you identify positions you may already be qualified for, a career assessment could also introduce you to jobs you’ve never even heard of before.

    Go Back to School

The biggest obstacle that comes with changing career paths is undoubtedly training and education. For example, if you want to go from business management to cybersecurity, you’re going to need to know a thing or two about cybersecurity before you start applying for positions.

You may have to consider going back to school part-time for some career jumps. But, thanks to the internet, there are plenty of helpful tools and sites where you can pick up new skills in your off time, without having to set foot in a classroom ever.

    Consult a Recruiter

The job recruitment industry exists for a reason. If you’re unhappy in your current career but don’t know what you want to do and don’t want to undergo a lot of extra education, you may want to consider calling a job recruiter.

A job recruiter will be able to help you assess your current skill set and experience and line you up with a new career you’re already qualified to take on. One of the best upsides of using a job recruiter is apart from helping you decide what you want to do next — your recruiter can help connect you with open positions in your new field.

Once you figure out what you want to be, you’re going to need to start preparing for your first new job interview. If you think you may need a bit of help landing a job in your new field, you may want to consider signing up for some interview coaching.

    How to Choose New Career

Now that you know a bit more about choosing a new career, it’s time to get to work, taking your professional life to the next level.
