Studying in the Southeast of England
With over two hundred and seventy miles of
coastline, plenty of open spaces and attractive countryside,
the South East of England is the ideal place to combine study
with a holiday. The four counties of Kent, East and West Sussex
and Surrey attract a large number of overseas students looking
to improve their language skills or pursue their general studies.
The South East is Britain's gateway region,
with Gatwick Airport, the ports of Dover and Folkestone and
the Channel Tunnel providing routes into the region. And with
Heathrow Airport and the ports of Portsmouth and Southampton
just on the doorstep, the South East is easily accessible,
and has the added bonus of its proximity and rail links to
London. Many Language Schools are open all year round and
offer intensive English language courses, combined with English
for Business, for example, or English for Teachers. Many are
accredited by the British Council and are members of ARELS.
Located in historic cities, such as Canterbury, or along the
East Sussex coast in Eastbourne, Brighton and Hastings, these
schools offer not only top quality tutoring but also social
programmes.
Many students have the opportunity to stay with
local host families, enabling them to learn more about England
than just the language. The University of Kent at Canterbury
is one of 14 British and Irish Universities offering study
holiday courses as part of the Summer Academy study holiday
programme. Offering students the opportunity to study under
expert guidance while providing an interesting and enjoyable
holiday, courses available at Canterbury include The Wonders
of the World Wide Web, The Gardens of Kent and English - the
Language of the World and the Millennium. The Earnley Concourse,
near Chichester in West Sussex, is a well-equipped residential
centre offering a programme of leisure interest courses. Subjects
offered include arts and crafts, history and heritage, countryside
studies, music, cookery and language learning and other special
interest topics such as personal development, astrology, photography
and health and fitness.
West Dean College, also near Chichester, offers
short courses on gardening and garden-related subjects. From
the Kitchen Garden for Beginners to Papermaking from Plants
or Walling in Flint and Stone, these courses offer expert
tuiton for small groups in a lovely setting. For sporty types,
there are a vast array of opportunities for students of all
ages to test their abilities. From aeroplane and helicopter
flight training to dry slope skiing and snowboarding; motor
racing and rally driving to diver training, the South East
has it all.
