Studying in Qatar

Qatar is an Arab emirate in the Middle East, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the north-easterly coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

Qatar has the world's largest per capita production and proven reserves of both oil and natural gas. In 2010, Qatar had the world's highest GDP per capita, while the economy grew by 19.40%, making it the fastest in the world. Qatar also has the highest human development in the Arab World after the United Arab Emirates. In 2009, Qatar was the United States' 5th largest export market in the Middle East, trailing behind the U.A.E., Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Education in Qatar

With its hugely growing economy, Qatar is a great place to study. Where better to study than in the country with the worlds biggest oil and gas production.

University education in Qatar started in the seventies when two colleges of education, one for male and one for female students, were established in 1973. The new campus for Qatar University was officially inaugurated in 1985.

Qatar has nine universities which serve 12,480 students, alongside foreign universities who host campuses in Qatar. Higher education in Qatar is much more vast, with 567 schools in operation, both in the public and the private sector. A large number of new schools are also under construction, particularly public schools, in order to meet increased demand which arose as a result of the large increase in population that the country has seen of late.

Studying in QatarSome universities from the United States and Canada have opened satellite campuses in the country at Education City, Qatar. The universities include Weill Medical College, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Texas A&M University, College of the North Atlantic-Qatar and the University of Calgary-Qatar. Furthermore, Stenden University Qatar has been offering bachelor degree programs for over 8 years in Doha, Qatar. The programs are fully accredited by both Qatari and Dutch governments.

Courses offered at these universities are mostly limited to Bachelors degrees, and don't contain all of the faculties they do on their home campuses. Check with the individual universities to see what courses they offer in Qatar.

Admission to universities in Qatar for international students

10 to 25% of university places in Qatar are reserved for international students. International students should have a High School Certificate or a recognised equivalent. Applications should be made to the Academic Registrar at least six months in advance of the programme commencing. International students admitted on a scholarship programmes are granted welfare services.

In order to study in Qatar, you must meet specific language requirements. A good knowledge of Arabic is required for all major subjects, except Engineering, Biomedical Science and Nursing, which are taught in English. Sometimes international students undertake a year of Arabic before admission, but it is best to contact the university direct to find out if you will be required to do so.

Visas
