Lille Welcomes International Students
I am more than happy to welcome international students from
122 countries who would like to know more about our country
and more particularly Lille.
As
the capital city of the County of Nord-Pas de Calais and the
gateway of North-West Europe, Lille is by nature an international
city, in the region of the Channel Tunnel, 2 hours from London,
35 minutes from Brussels and 1 hour from Paris by TGV (High
speed train).
So, within a radius of 300 kilometres around the city of
Lille, 100 million Europeans actually live and work, making
this one of the most populated and developed regions in the
world.
Nowadays 1 worker out of 7 in our Region works for an international
company. Twenty-five countries are represented, in particular
Great Britain, Belgium, Germany and the USA. As far as Import-Export
is concerned, the Region of Nord Pas de Calais has the third
highest turnover in France and is the first one after Paris
with regards to the setting up of foreign industries.
In addition, 150,000 students, with 100,000 in Lille and
its agglomeration, are welcomed annually to many universities
and Business and Engineering Schools.
In
Lille itself and on the campus nearby you will find many institutions:
Three public and one private universities of Techniques and
Sciences, Law and Medicine, Human Sciences, Literature and
Art. 5 Business Schools, 13 Engineering Schools and a School
of Journalism that is well-known in Frenchspeaking countries.
All these institutions are offering a large range of degrees,
or diplomas in combination with European Universities, and
through a process of exchange programs with international
universities.
Lille is very well thought of by students who study there,
not only because it has all the advantages I have mentioned
above but also because it is very lively and offers important
cultural activities, with the National Orchestra of Lille,
many museums, 11 theatres and concert venues, and 71 cinemas.
In addition Lille will be the 2004 European capital of Culture
and will organise an exceptional program of festivals, exhibition
and Art events to coincide.
And finally, Lille is attractive because of its way of life.
Many sport centres are available in the city centre and in
the suburbs and Lille is only half an hour from the coast.
There is even a synthetic ski piste 20 minutes from the city
centre.
These are just some of the good reasons to discover Lille
and I will add at this point, the last but not the least:
Citizens of Lille are simple and hearty, and they welcome
people of all cultures. So I say simply and warmly: Welcome
to Lille!
Martine Aubry, Mayor of Lille
