Study
in Europe
Europe in the late 1990s experienced profound
political, social, and cultural change. The massive transformation
of countries in the former Soviet bloc
coupled with European
Union-driven initiatives have effected every aspect of daily
life from Belgium to Poland.
Ideologies
that favor integration, assimilation, or opposition compete
for prominence on a host of issues: the expansion of the European
Union; the inclusion of central and eastern European countries
in NATO; a common European currency, immigration and refugee
policy; welfare, work, and social programs; environmental
regulations; and funding for arts and cultural institutions.
Encompassing almost 50 nations with 600 million
people speaking 48 languages and as many dialects, the region
is diverse in every sense of the word. This diversity has
been continental Europe's appeal to generations of travelers
and scholars.
With
a greater range of programs beyond the traditional European
destinations of the United Kingdom, France,
Switzerland and Spain,
students now have opportunities to study an array of contemporary
issues facing the continent at leading universities that will
set their study abroad experience apart.
The wide variety of programs in Europe can provide students
with rigorous academic course work, the opportunity to begin
or continue language study, and well structured co-curricular
programs that take advantage of living in the setting on which
their studies are focused.
