What is Humanities?
With the creation of new universities and with new
areas of study being opened up student numbers within
humanities programs have doubled in the last ten years.
Traditionally disciplines such as English, linguistics,
history, modern foreign languages, classical
studies, music, philosophy, theology,
philosophy, archaeology, political
science and sociology were the main staple
of humanities courses in the older universities. More
recently the combined or joint degree, interdisciplinary
or cross-disciplinary degree has gained ground. Degrees
such as the American Studies, Women's Studies,
Media Studies, Cultural Studies and European
Studies would all fall into this category.
