Studying in Liverpool

Located in the North West coast of England, this region has a great variety pf places to visit and a wide range of places to stay. There’s easy access by rail, road, sea or air and local transport and motorway networks make getting around the region simply too.

Liverpool, at the heart of Merseyside, is one of a handful of truly world-famous cities, with a reputation around the globe, particularly for The Beatles and football. Sports fans are spoilt for choice here with two Premier Division Football teams offering stadium tours, and a chance to experience the atmosphere of a first class game of football virtually every week in the season. Aintree Racecourse hosts the most famous steeplechase in the world plus other race meetings during the year, and there’s the Grand National Experience for visitors to take a look behind the scenes, and see what it’s really like to ride in the race on the Grand National simulator! And if you’re planning a visit to the region, don’t forget Manchester is just 40 minutes away, with a range of accommodation to suit all price ranges.

The Beatles

Probably the most famous group the world has ever known are increasingly popular with visitors to the City, and there really could be no better place to celebrate the music of Lennon and McCartney. The Beatles Story exhibition and The Magical Mystery Tour are not to be missed-they provide a fascinating insight into the lives of four ordinary lads from Liverpool who are now a firm part of our popular culture. A Beatles combo ticket offers discount on both these attractions plus free entry to the world famous Cavern Club.

Liverpool is bidding to be the European Capitol of Culture in 2008 and music is very much part of the Culture-classical at the Phil, contemporary in venues such as the Cavern, the Picket and the Lomax and dance at superclub Cream which has proved itself to be a hit with Liverpool’s 50,000 students! Theatrical performances can once again be seen at the newly restored Liverpool Playhouse, where many a household name made their debut. Innovative theatre is staged at the Everyman, whilst ballet, opera and musicals can be seen at the largest regional theatre in Britain, the Empire.

The City’s galleries house more collections of national significance than any other area outside London. There’s something to suit all tastes from the classic collection at the Walker Art Gallery to the ultra modern Tate Liverpool and both have a frequently changing programme of exhibitions by national and international artists. The fascinating work of a museum and gallery conservators can be seen at the Award Winning Conservation Centre, recently voted European Museum of the Year.

Liverpool is a truly multi-cultural city, and in celebration of the city being home to the oldest established Chinese community in Europe, a spectacular new arch has recently been erected in Chinatown by workers from Liverpool’s sister city Shanghai. Some of the best Chinese restaurants in the northwest are located here too!

The city also offers a great heritage trail for visitors – from the most popular heritage attraction in Britain at the Albert Dock, (where the not-t-o-be-missed Merseyside Maritime Museum is located), to the two cathedrals located on Hope Street. Liverpool Cathedral is the largest Anglican Cathedral in the world, while the more modern looking Metropolitan Cathedral has a stunning rotund interior design. No heritage tour would be complete without a ride on the Mersey Ferry. First started by monks in the 12th century, today’s cruises provides discounted admission to waterfront attractions with added incentives for group purchases. Break your ferry journey at Woodside and continue the exploration of Merseyside’s heritage in Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula. Replica 1940’s trams run from the ferry terminal to the transport museum on a regular basis and you can visit Merseyside’s oldest building, Birkenhead Priory (established in 1150), before continuing your tour. Just a short drive from here takes you to East Float where the two veteran Warships from the Falklands War have been preserved and are now open to the public. Pre-booking will also guarantee you a tour of a German U-boat, the only one that’s open to the public in Britain.

There’s always plenty happening in Birkenhead’s Hamilton Quarter. Renowned for its lively arts scene it offers arts and crafts galleries, top class restaurants and a series of festivals and events.

There’s always plenty happening in Birkenhead’s Hamilton Quarter. Renowned for its lively arts scene and offers arts and crafts galleries, top class restaurants and a series of festivals and events. There are many picturesque towns and villages on the Wirral Peninsula which can provide a delightful tour. Stop at Ness Gardens for a look at one of the best displays of rockeries, rose gardens and water features. One of the most fascinating villages to visit is Port Sunlight. Built by Lord Lever for his soap factory workers, it is now preserved and regularly wins awards for its well kept appearance and beautiful floral displays. The Lady Lever Gallery, which houses some of the Lever family treasures, paintings and other works of art, is also located here.

Garden tours are also popular in the Southport area. The Botanic Gardens in Churchtown are a must for anyone interested in floral displays. The Southport Flower Show, held annually in August, has become the most popular Flower Show in the North of England and is well worth a visit. A tour to this part of Merseyside should also include a few hours shopping, as the town is renowned for its excellent shops located in a particularly attractive environment in Lord Street.

Southport also offers a truly fun day out – spend some time soaking up the atmosphere of the seaside, take in some of the thrilling rides at Pleasureland and don’t miss the amusements at Silcock’s Funland. Southport’s a lively place in the evenings too with plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs to entertain you well into the night.

Golfers mustn’t miss the opportunity to play on one of the area’s top golf courses, such as one of the “Royals” located at Holyake on the Wirral Peninsula and at Birkdale, a tough course located on the coast just south of southport.

Nature lovers should head for this coast, renowned for outstanding natural features. The Formby Squirrel Reserve has one of Britain’s last thriving colonies of red squirrels and miles of walks through the woods and dunes.
