The Internet and Fashion
The Internet is becoming an indispensable tool for the Fashion
Student. If you know where to look, you will be able to get
ideas for your projects, inspirations for Designs, and possible
become more well-dressed too!
Whether you are studying Fashion or not, everyone loves to
window shop, promising themselves that they will just look
and not buy - and the Internet is so good for that! You can
visit the shops of Paris, London and New York, and have a
good look, even if it is raining outside! The Internet reinforces
and reminds you of the fashions you mat have seen on the High
Street or in mail-order catalogues. The French mail-order
company La Redoute has an interesting site on www.redoute.co.uk,
which has designs by Stella McCartney for Chloe. The English
company Ghost has several retail outlets in London, but wherever
you are, you can see their designs on www.ghost.co.uk.
For students who want to wear Designer clothes but not pay
Designer prices, see www.haburi.com. 'Haburi' is Japanese,
and means anything popular and prestigious.
Some Internet sites will be more useful when you are actually
studying on a Fashion course, and need up-to-date information
on Design Trends, Shop Reports, and more. www.wgsn-edu.com
is the fashion student's secret weapon. The world's leading
Fashion companies have to pay an annual subscription to this
site, but if you are a student on certain fashion and design
courses, you can get free access. This site gives you all
the resources a Fashion Designer needs, and it is a great
help with those presentations! For those studying Costume
Design, a site that shows clothes from film projects is www.andreagler.co.uk.
Vogue magazine has long been a favourite for lovers of Fashion,
and their website shows the different language versions of
the magazine: www.vogue.co.uk.
If you want to know what skills are required for specific
fashion careers, go to www.careers-in-clothing.co.uk,
where there are descriptions of the different job titles in
clothing and their roles.
Although fashion students cannot get in to see the Trade
Fashion Shows put on by the Fashion Design companies, they
can often see the best elements on the Internet. London Fashion
Week is such a site, and can be found at www.londonfashionweek.co.uk.
These Fashion Trade sites are often only 'live' for a short
time, and only appear just before the Exhibitions start.
Once you are ready to hit the job market, there are specific
fashion-related job sites that will save you time and legwork.
See www.givemeajob.co.uk
for names and addresses of the larger fashion companies in
the UK.
As is usually the way, once you get on the Internet, you
will find one site leads to another, and soon you will have
your own list of fashion sites that are useful and enjoyable
to visit, whether or not you wish to make it your career.
Happy Surfing!
