What kind of
jobs does a nurse carry out in Denmark?
Working as a nurse involves close contact with people faced
with difficult situations. Nursing is based on professional
knowledge (biological and behavioural science and nursing
studies) to provide holistic care achieved through the processes
of nursing care, guidance and education.
In
many situations you become the patients most important
link to the outside world. Your skills along with professional
knowledge make the difference between a negative and positive
experience for the patients.
The work of a
nurse comprises four main areas:
- to carry out
nursing
- to manage
and coordinate the nursing
- to share
and transfer knowledge about nursing
- to improve
the nursing field
To
carry out nursing
You
implement the nursing skills required by the patients. These
include activities of daily duties. For example; washing the
patient, changing dressings, administering medicine, giving
injections as well as supporting the patient emotionally.
To manage and coordinate
the nursing
You provide leadership
and management of nursing care for the individual patient.
You are also responsible for the administrative and coordinating
functions within your team and become the team leader.
To share and transfer
nursing
You share your
knowledge about nursing with other professionals, trade unions,
students, workers, patients, relatives etc.
You promote nursing through education or role modelling while
implementing nursing care for your patients.
To improve the
nursing field
Development in
the nursing profession is achieved through the sharing of
knowledge and education with other nurses and other professional
groups, and through reflection and research of knowledge and
other practical opportunities, as well as continuous personal
development.
All in all the
job of a nurse is versatile, varied and developmental.
The nursing study
in Denmark is a degree consisting of theory and practice.
The nursing education is a medium-cycle non-university programme,
outside Denmark the study is referred to as Bachelor of Nursing.
The duration of the education is grounded in academic disciplines
in health with autonomy, physiology, humanities and nursing
studies. Please note that it is imperative that you command
both spoken and written Danish as the training is conducted
in Danish.
