At
the University of Leicester Department of Physics and
Astronomy one of the most exciting space projects of our
age is in preparation. In May 2003 the Beagle 2 Lander
will be transported to Mars in the European Space Agencys
Mars Express spacecraft. Its aim? To establish whether
there are signs of life on the red planet.Beagle 2 is
a joint venture between the University of Leicester and
the Open University, with partner organisations across
Europe. The Open University leads the Beagle 2 consortium.
The Lander Operations Centre will be at Leicesters
National Space Centre co-founded by the University
and City of Leicester - with a complementary Operations
Planning Centre at the Open University. In the University

If
everything works totally, then we will get a full characterisation
of the landing site the Isidis Basin which
has never been explored before. Its an exciting
site because it looks like a sedimentary basin, which
makes it a good site for the preservation of signs of
life.

Leicesters
space research programme is one of the biggest in Europe.
A recent peer review of the Theoretical Astrophysics Group
acknow-ledged them as world leaders in their field.
Because Leicester Physics and Astronomy degree courses
are based on the depart-ments considerable research
strengths, under-graduates participate in front line research
activities through their project work.
An innovative teaching programme of lectures, seminars
and specialist workshops supported by tutorials means

During
its anniversary year, the University of Leicester has
attracted the highest number of students ever in its history.
Now, with more than 18,500 students, it is rated as a
top 20 UK university by the Financial Times and the Sunday
Times.
A £33 million expansion and improvement plan will
create new buildings to house space science, mathematics
and biomedical research, while new laboratories and equipment
will enhance research areas such as chemistry, green technology,
archaeology and heart research, ensuring that Leicester
scientists will continue to be among the leaders of world
research. |
