The University of Portsmouth has an outstanding reputation in the geosciences, based on more than 35 years of active teaching and research. Academic staff carry out research on every continent and many are acknowledge as international experts in their field.

 
     
 
Among other recent achievements, staff advised and assisted on the BBC's ground breaking television series, "Walking with Dinosaurs". Our Environmental degrees continue to innovate with our unique degree in Environmental Hazards, for instance, covering areas as diverse as volcanology and seismology, floods and landslides, through to man-made disasters such as pollution incidents and climate change.
 
     
 

Portsmouth is an ideal part of the UK to study both geological and environmental sciences. The area has possible the widest variety of marine and terrestrial habitats in the country and a wide range of geological sites, not to mention famous fossil sites in the Isle of Wight and the World Heritage Site on the Dorset coast. Many of these sites are used for fieldwork exercises, student project work and research. Students also undertake international fieldwork that may take them to Cyprus, Spain, Southern Italy, France, Germany and Austria.

Our teaching style is friendly and informal, with a lot of time devoted to small classes and tutorial support. Much time is spent on practical exercises such as mapping, analysis, modelling, site visits and field courses. Your studies will be backed up by extensive learning and technical resources including specialised state-of-the-art equipment.
