Studying Computer Science
|
Computer Science is the subject at the heart of networked computer systems in what is now called the Information Society . It focuses on the in-depth study of computer systems and on the process of computation itself. If you enrol for an undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the University of Nottingham we will teach you the fundamentals of the subject and how to do project work, both in teams and as an individual. We round off our course by offering you a wide range of option modules to complete your degree. At the heart of computer systems lies computer hardware together with the all-important system and application software. These components work with the communications infrastructure to link everything together in local- and wide-area networks. By studying Computer Science you will be training yourself not just to use today's systems effectively — which is Information Technology — but also to participate in developing the computer systems of the future.

Computer Science has evolved, over the past 30 years, more rapidly than any other subject
in history. The place of computers at the heart of our society is now fundamental; modern
civilization and modern economies just cannot run without them. So, just as the Industrial
Revolution changed the 19th and 20th century world we now find that the Information Revolution is driving the 21st century; this is why the present, and the future, of just about
everything we do depends on Computer Science.
If you choose to become a computer scientist at the University of Nottingham, and to
study for an undergraduate degree in the subject, you will cover the principles of what can
be computed and how efficiently and elegantly the computation can be done. You will also
study how computers work and how they communicate with one another. You will soon
realise that the software running on the computer is much more important, nowadays,
than the computer hardware itself and so writing computer programs (in a variety of languages)
is an important part of any computer scientist's education. You'll be taught the
strengths and weaknesses of languages such as Java, C++, Perl, Haskell and Prolog plus
how to program in all of them.

To complete your education as a computer scientist you will learn about the methods and
the frameworks (the algorithms and the data structures ) used in almost all programming
languages. You'll also encounter modules such as Computer Networks, Computer Security,
Databases, User Interface Design and Operating Systems. In your second year you will
participate in a Team Project and in your final year you deliver an Individual Project on a
theme of your own choice. Best of all we offer a wide choice of option modules as part of
your degree and these enable you to become the sort of computer scientist that you want
to be. Here are just a few of our choices: Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Virtual Reality,
Computer Security, Computer Graphics, Image Analysis, Digital Documents, Formal Computation, Scheduling, Hypertext and the World Wide Web. There is even an option to do
some of your modules (or your project work) in our partner institutions in Europe, Asia and
the USA. |
