The
Department forms part of the Thames-side campus of one
of the University of London's founding colleges. Maxwell,
Wheatstone and Appleton once taught at Kings and
made important contributions to electrical science.
Our aim is to achieve and maintain national and international
recognition for excellence in our chosen research fields
and to provide a quality education for the formation
of professional engineers, enabling them to fulfil their
career potential and contribute to the advancement of
their profession and to the welfare of society. The
Department is committed to achieving these aims within
the framework of a caring, friendly, learning environment.
The Department has strong research activities in Signal
Processing, Telecommunications, Microwaves and Optoelectronics
and has a very close link with the Centre for Telecommunications
Research which specialises in Personal and Mobile Communications.
Distinctive
undergraduate programmes
The Department has three flagship four-year MEng programmes;
students may also study for three years and obtain a
BEng degree in the respective specialisation. A feature
of all programmes is that the first two years are common
and compulsory. Special care is taken to teach transferrable
skills and students are also expected to pursue the
study of a language.
In the final year of the MEng programmes students spend
a semester on an industrial or foreign university placement,
take two courses in their specialisation at Masters
level and undertake a systems-based advanced group project.
All programmes are fully accredited by the IEE.
Study at Masters level
The main MSc programme is on Mobile and Personal Communications,
a taught degree lasting one year, or two years part-time.
Students entering with at least an upper second class
honours degree can choose a one year research MSc in
one of five areas. Two courses are studied and a full
time research project is undertaken in one of the department's
research groups.
