Kent Law School |
| The
Kent Law School (KLS) is widely recognised as one of
the leading Law Schools in the United Kingdom. The School
is at the forefront of innovation in legal education, pioneering
new approaches to the study, teaching and research of
law. KLS is unique in the range of resources and opportunities
it offers its Law students. These include: |
Teaching
Quality
KLS was rated 'EXCELLENT' in the 2003
Teaching and Learning Quality Review. It was also 'HIGHLY
COMMENDED' in six areas including the Kent
Law clinic, its Training in and use of Electronic Legal
Resources and the First Year Law Foundation Programme.
Further, Nick Jackson, the Convenor of the Property
Law course, was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship
for his teaching excellence in 2002. The first lawyer
to receive this Award.
Research Quality
The excellence of our teaching is enhanced by the internationally
and nationally acclaimed research which has won KLS
a grade 5 (on a scale of 0 to 5*). In other words you
will be taught by teachers who are leading figures in
their subject areas.
The Kent Law Clinic
KLS is the only UK Law School to have developed a ‘clinical
legal studies programme as part of its undergraduate
curriculum The Kent Law Clinic, based on the Canterbury
campus, gives you a unique opportunity to practice law
(under qualified supervision) while you are still an
undergraduate. Students represent clients in a wide
range of areas enabling them to acquire vital legal
and practical skills such as interviewing, case anagement,
negotiating and advocacy. These skills can only be learnt
through ‘real' practice.
In 1998, the Clinic was the joint winner of the Times/Justice
Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Civil Justice.
Competition for the award included Queens Counsel, major
solicitors firms and civil liberties organizations.
The then Masters of the Rolls, Lord Woolf, was a member
of the Awarding Committee. Employers are particularly
impressed by the skills developed in clinical work and
the ability of our students to obtain training contracts
and pupillages has been considerably enhanced.
Library and Electronic Legal Resources
The KLS Library is one of the best in the UK. However,
it is particularly distinctive in offering to students
access to world class electronic legal resources. KLS
’s Lawlinks pages are recognized as the best electronic
legal resource web site in the UK (www.ukc.ac.uk/law/).Lawlinks
has won many awards including the Lex Websites Prize
for the best Electronic Information Resources (internationally)and
also the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians
Prize. All modules have their own Web sites and core
modules include audio versions of lectures using MP3
software. We have mailing lists and bulletin boards
that you can use for discussion with other students
and staff. You can sample some of our lectures by visiting
our website and taking an introductory IT tour of the
