Engineering Doctorate (EngD)
Engineered Metals for High Performance Applications in Aerospace, and Related Technologies.

Research projects are industry-based with industrial and academic supervisors. Industrial partners include Rolls-Royce plc, TWI, QinetiQ, Goodrich, BAE SYSTEMS, Mettis Aerospace and Doncaster. University Partners are Birmingham, Cambridge, Oxford, Southampton and Swansea. This four-year EngD degree programme is one of two awarded in 2001 by EPSRC to the University of Birmingham (the other is in Formulation Engineering). Designed for both full-time students and seconded employees, it will develop professional research engineering skills and metallurgical expertise through research and course-work.

Stipend £17,000+/year for UK candidates with a 1st or 2.1 in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Engineering – Flexible start date – Projects currently available include: Rolls-Royce: Several programmes addressing novel applications of advanced materials and processing in gas turbine engines; Jaguar: Advanced Automotive Material Research; TWI (The Welding Institute): Advances in Joining Processes for Metals; and: Corrosion, Structural Integrity and Inspection of Welded Joints; INEOS Chlor Enterprises: New Materials for Metal Bipolar Plates in Low Temperature Fuel Cells.

Master of Research (MRes)
The Science and Engineering of Materials

12 weeks of coursework/research training in Materials Science embedded in full-year research project with opportunities for industrial interaction.
Stipend up to £10,000/year for UK candidates with a 1st of 2.1 in Science or Engineering – Some funding is available to EU candidates – Flexible start date.

PhD Studentships

The following PhD projects are currently available: Comparison of Novel Sensor Systems for Smart Structures; Alloy and Process Development for High Strength Ti Eutectoid Alloys (Rolls-Royce, QinetiQ); Corrosion of Automotive Aluminium Alloys (Alcan)

Sports and Biomedical Materials: Smart prostheses for disabled athletes – bioceramic - novel golf club heads - composites for racing cars - steels for ice skates - new bicycle helmet materials - hand/racquet gripping - biomedical magnets - surface treatments for implants.
Materials for sustainable development: hydrogen storage material - fuel cells for electric vehicles - high efficiency magnets.

High Performance Materials: alloy development - fatigue and fracture - surface engineering – corrosion – casting – welding – ceramics – polymers – superconductors - laser processing.

  • Stipend £10,500+/year (3 years) – Flexible start date. Some funding is available to EU candidates.
