| Intensive
English Program |
|
|
UCA
offers a comprehensive program in English as
a second language for students whose first language
is not English. The Intensive English Program
(IEP) helps students improve the English and
study skills neces-sary for success in American
colleges and universities. The curriculum includes
courses at three levels: low intermediate, intermediate,
and advanced.
Courses
for students with no previous experience in
English are not offered.
Students
receive instruction in listening, note-taking,
pronunciation, conversation, making oral presenta-tions,
grammar, writing, reading, vocabulary and cultural
orientation. A TOEFL preparation course is also
offered.
The IEP is located in the Department of World
Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Fall and
Spring classes are 16-week programs that follow
the same academic schedule as undergraduate
classes. A five-week Summer Program in
American Culture and English (SPACE) is
offered during the summer.
Conditional
acceptance to undergraduate programs is available
to academically qualified UCA applicantswho
meet all admission requirements with the exception
of the required TOEFL score. If a student successfully
completes the Advanced level of the IEP during
the fall or spring term with no individual course
grade below a B, no TOEFL score
is required to attend the UCA undergraduate
school. IEP students who have been conditionally
admitted to UCA may be eligible to enroll in
concurrent undergraduate courses if they have
a minimum TOEFL score of 450/133 and permission
from the IEP Coordinator.
The
IEP also sponsors the Conversation Partner Program,
a popular activity that pairs IEP studentswith
native English speakers. This exchange helps
IEP students to learn more about American culture
and to practice their English on a one-to-one
basis with native speakers. IEP students also
havecomplete access to all UCA facilities, organizations
and services.
