Living in Abu Dhabi
Study Here:
Abu Dhabi University
Abu Dhabi has a high standard of living, a tax haven with good housing, education and health care. In 2009, the population of Abu Dhabi was estimated at around nearly 900,000.
Culture
Being a Gulf country, Abu Dhabi's culture is predominantly Arabic and Islam is the most widely followed religion. However, Abu Dhabi has a diverse and multicultural society.
The city's cultural imprint as a small, ethnically homogenous pearling community was changed with the arrival of other ethnic groups and nationals throughout the early 1900s. Arabic and English are the official languages, while Urdu and Hindi are widely spoken.
Major holidays in Abu Dhabi include Eid al Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, Eid ul-Azha, which marks the end of Haj, and National Day (2 December), which marks the formation of the United Arab Emirates.
Compared to the West, Abu Dhabi is conservative, yet it embraces other cultures. For example you can buy pork and practice your own religion. On the other hand, per-marital sex or displays of affection in public are frowned upon and illegal.
Muslim women are expected to cover up, but expat women don't have to. Wearing revealing clothes however can attract unwanted attention, so it's best to dress sensibly and avoid low cut tops and miniskirts.
Climate
Abu Dhabi has a hot arid climate, with sunny and blue skies expected throughout the year. The months of June through to September are generally hot and humid, with maximum temperatures averaging above 35 °C (95 °F). During this time, sandstorms also occur intermittently, in some cases reducing visibility down to a few metres. The weather is cooler from November to March, but there is often dense fog on some days.
Things to do in Abu Dhabi
The Corniche (water front) is good for runners, cyclists and a spot of fishing, while the New Corniche, which is greener and more picturesque, is great for bbqs and picnics.
For the adventurous, Noukhada Tours offers sailing and kayaking, 'dune bashing', where you shoot around the dunes in a 4x4, whilst the health and fitness clubs offer simulated indoor sky diving. Alternatively, Abu Dhabi has some lovely health clubs, providing gyms, tennis and squash courts, swimming pools, spas and a range of other activates.
Abu Dhabi nightlife has some good bars and clubs that are great for a few drinks after work or socialising on the weekend.
Children and teenagers living in Abu Dhabi find their options close to unlimited, with parks, swimming pools, beaches and play areas leaving them spoiled for choice. |
